World Parkinson's Day, observed on April 11th, is a crucial reminder of the challenges faced by those with the fastest growing brain disease: Parkinson's disease. In recognition, it's time to explore what Parkinson’s disease is, and what we can do to fight it.

So, What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disease that impacts the nervous system which in return, can greatly impact movement. Often it starts subtly with symptoms like tremors, stiffness, or moving more slowly. One of the key features of Parkinson's is the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for communication from the brain to nerves throughout the body. When these cells are damaged or lost, dopamine levels decrease, leading to the motor symptoms characteristic of Parkinson's disease. This disruption in dopamine production disrupts the brain's ability to regulate movement smoothly, which continues to cause ongoing neurological and physical symptoms for people affected by the disease.

Prevention Strategies:

Parkinson's disease can develop due to a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors leading to the hallmark symptoms of the condition.

Lifestyle changes alone cannot totally prevent the disease, but research shows its impact. Let’s review some specific healthy habits to adopt when talking Parkinson’s prevention:

  • Quality Sleep: Prioritize sleep hygiene to give your brain the rejuvenation it needs.

  • Manage Stress: Use stress-reduction techniques such as meditation or yoga, be mindful of your mental health.
